God-Des & She “Love Machine” from Three (2009 third release)

Watch Sunday’s G&S video, “Love You Better,” here.
Watch Sunday’s SNP video, “Expression,” here.

My Show of the Month for May 2012 is Salt-N-Pepa with God-Des & She that takes place this coming Saturday night (at the end of the week!) at the Belmont here in the ATX.  See that post and get all the deets here.

Since I have a week, I’ve posted two videos from SNP & G&S yesterday and today.

As far as I know this is G&S’ latest video.  I wanted to show their versatility.  The first video I posted is very much hip hop/R&B.  This is much more pop.  It reminds me of the B-52s, actually.  Of course there is always going to be a hip hop element with one half of the duo being a rapper, but it’s nice that they spread their wings and explore different terrains.

Salt-N-Pepa “Shake Your Thang” with E.U. from A Salt With A Deadly Pepa (1988 second release)

NOTE:  Unfortunately, this video is embedded, but it’s the best one I could find on YouTube that also shows the video in its entirety.

This is taking it back to their sophomore release.  They just had fun party songs and fun videos.  Peep Kid ‘n Play in the video, who SNP used to roll with and play with back in the early days.  Guess they outgrew them later?  Who knows?  But, I just wanted to take it back to the SNP old old school with this second video selection.  Enjoy!

Since I have a week, I’m going to post two videos from SNP & G&S today and tomorrow.

Now, I haven’t heard as much stuff from G&S as I have from SNP, I must admit, but I’ve seen them live a few times and from what I have heard, this is my favorite so far.  I loved 1990s New Jack Swing when I was younger and this song has that vibe to me.  Though I’m a sucker for pop, I love me some R&B/soul, too.  And this is the most R&B-sounding song from G&S, again, that I’ve heard.  I like that the sentiment is interesting and relatable and that the storyline is compelling.

Really?  And, they’re all talented and strong women, so it’s not even a question of that.  I love my women artists.  Who doesn’t love SNP and who in Austin does not fall in love with G&S once you see and/or meet them?  G&S are based here, y’all, and if you didn’t know, now you know!  I think the lesbians can be said to be a given, but, then, they get the gay boys, too, and soon the world, which I’m sure they already have some of, anyway.  This will be a nice mixed crowd.  I love it because it’s a nice bridge (a word someone used when I was talking to them about this show recently and I liked it, so I’m using it).  A straight-gay alliance of hip hop, if you will!  At the end of the day, though, it really is just about good music, great performance, and charisma as artists and performers on stage.  And, all four ladies have all of this in droves.Salt-N-Pepa are from Queens and Brooklyn and represent hip hop globally.God-Des & She are from the Midwest and represent hip pop/soul in the gAyTX and the world.
